ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A SWEETHEART.
At the Worsip-etreet Police-court, Mark Macnally, 22, described as a •“ packer,” -was charged before Mr Hannay with having attempted to murder Elizabeth Phillips, by cutting her throat with a knife. Elizabeth Phillips, a young woman about 18, said she lived at 8, Wilkes-street, Brick-lane, Spitalflelde. Gn Satur<day, while she was at her tea, the prisoner with whom she had been keeping company, entered the room where she was. He had been out of work for some time, and she thought that had preyed on bis mind. It was also certain that he had had a little drink and no food. He sat down at the table and spoke to her, as he had done at times, “ rather harshly,” but she took no notice of that Then be asked he if she meant to keep this ■company. She said, “ Well, I don’t know.” Then he said, “ What shall 2 do if you don’t?” and he seemed ex-
cited. She told him not to do anything rash, and he said, “ I stall ; I shall kill you,,’ and he took up a k iife from the table and put it to her throat She screamed, and help came before much harm was done. She admitted that her neck was cut aud had been strapped up by the doctor, but she said it was net mnch, and she only wanted the prisoner bound over in bis own recognizances. The prisoner cried and said he meant no harm to the girl. He loved her too tn ch. Mr Ham ar said he required medical evidence, ami ordered a remand, refusing to allow bail.
