Darebin j Crystal ... 2 Topaz ... t>< 3 Fifteen started, it was a grand race, and won by a length and a quarter. [Bi Teleobaph.l WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING. . Wanganui, May 25. The Wanganui Annual Steeplechase Meeting * took place on the racecourse yesterday, and was fairly successful. The attendance of the public was scarcely so large as last year, though the stand and lawn were well patronised. The lotaluator wa* also patronised, £l,lOO being
put through. The principal event was a grea" siuprise, as Alarie, tiie winner, was supposed not to have a ghost of a show. He was bought as a hack three months for £2O. Accidents were numerous, the most serious being that which befell W. Edwards, the rider of Te V hetu. He was, however, able to get about, after a short time. The following are the events :— Wanganui Handicap Steeplechase, of 225 sovs.; distance, 3 miles. R. Higgie’s Alarie, 10st 51b (Heaton) ... 1 J. Wilson’s New Year, 10st 21b (Potts) ... 2 J. Rae’s Grey Mounts, lOst 121 b (0 wner) 3 —Lone Hand, Baron, Te "Whetu, C .tch’em, Chandler, Sunray, and Skylark also ran. Alarie and New Year made the running from the fail of the flag, and jumping splendid’y had the race all to themselves, the funner winning by ten lengths. Te Whetu fell when going well about one mile from home. Lonehand and Catch’em refused at the stone wall and were taken back to the paddock. The Baron finished nowhere. Time for 3 miles, 6 min. 46£secs. Maiden Steeplechase, of 100 sovs.; distance, 21 miles. G. H. Gibbon’s Mount, (J. Rae) 1 W. Douglas’s AG. (A. Keith) 2 Dr Connolly’s Dhudeen, (W. Nicholson) .. 3 —Raven, New Year, Sunray, and Parikaranga also ran. A good race between the first two; Mount winning by a neck. Time, 6m. 3|sec. Grand Stand Steeplechase, of 75 sovs.; distance, about 3 miles. AV. Douglas’s Baron (Keith) 1 W. Douglas’s A.G., (Heaton) 2 —Te Whetu, Lone Hand, and Grey Mom us also ran. Lone Hand baulked at. the stone wall, and caused Grey Mum us and Te Whetu to stop also, and neither of the trio gut further. Consolation Handicap Steeplechase, of 40 sovs.; distance, about 1|- miles J. Wilson’s New Year. lOst 131 b (Potts)... 1 Chandler, list, (Watt) 2 J. Ellis’s Lune Hand, 12st 71b, (M‘Coy) ... 3 Lone Hand was the favorite, and took his Jumps tn good style, but the weight told on him, and although ridden right out he could only finish a bad tl ird, Grey Momus fourth.
