PORT OF POVERTY BAY. ARRIVALS. 23rd May.—Gi-bornc, schooner, Captain Skinner. from Auckland via the Coast, with a full general cargo. 24th May.—Southern Cross, Captain Bemech, from Auckland, with t .ree passengers, and a general cargo. The brigantine Isabella left Oamaru for Gisberne, with a cargo of produce. The 8.8. Rosina, Captain Harries, steamed for the Coast last evening, with a number of passengers and general cargo. The Union Company’s Te Anau, Captain Carey, will leave for Auckland and Russell on Sunday next, transhipping her cargo and passengers for Sydney into the Arawata at Auckland. The Union Company’s Rotorua, Captain Tozer, wilt leave Auckland to-day for Gisborne ; she is announced te leave for Melbourne via Southern Ports to-morrow afternoon. Last boat 4 p.m. The s.s. Oreti arrived in Napier yesterday, from Wellington ; she was expected to leave that port last night for Gisborne, and therefore may be looked for to-day. She is announced to take her de|>arture at 9 o’clock to-morrow morning for Auckland. The Gisborne, schooner, Captain Skinner, arrived in the Bay on Tuesday morning last, from Auckland via the Coast. She left Auckland on the 9th inst, for Mercury Bay to load with timber. The Gisborne will leave for Auckland about the end of the week. The Union Company’s Southern Cross, Captain Bemech, dropped anchor in the Bay yesterday morning, about 11.30 o’clock, with 62 tons of cargo, I horse (Wiki Dayrell), and 3 passengers. After discharging her cargo she weighed anchor towards the latter part of the day, and sailed for Napier and Wellington, taking with her 1 passenger, 1 horse, and a email cargo, viz, I bag grass seed, 7 casks tallow, 1 case, and a few packages. A NOVELTY IN OCE\N STEAMERS. The new ocean steamship, invented by Captain Moreland, uf thsCunard steamer Batavia, is being built near New York by the American Quirk Transit Steamship Company, of Boston. f»he is composed of wood, has a turtle-back deck, no masts, and nothing on deck except a pilot-lKnise, ventilators, and the smoke-pipe. The length is 151 feel, breadth of beam is 22 feet, the depth of the hold is 16i feet, the draught forward is 5| feet ft feet. The capacity is 512 tons. She will have three screws ; tlie main one of four blades, and of such pitch as to be capable of a speed of 30 knots an hour. The others will be fitted in the stern, behind the plates, and will be used in case of accident, when the plates will be used to steer with. The engines, boiler, and machinery, aie entirely of new designs, and capable of developing enormous power. The steamer will be named the Meteor. The inventor says she u ill revolutionise ocean steamship construction.
