ORIGIN OF THE NAME OF DUNEDIN.
With reference to the name of “ Dunedin,” Mr William Chambers sta'es in his interesting fifty yea s’ reminiscences which appeared in the February part of “Chamber's Journal,” that it was he who suggested the name of Dunedin for the town when the intention of its founders was to 'Call it New Edinburgh. Mr. Chambers jointed out that America was overt n with New This and New That (giving New York, New Orleans, and other as examples), and recommended their to fix upon Dunedin, the old "Celtic name of the capital of Scotland, •instead of New Edinburgh. This -advice was acted upon, and we think that She inhabitants when they find what a narrow escape was made from another “ New ” (New Zealand being -quite enough) 'must feel grateful to Mr William Chambers.
