Nearly a half of the 34,274 newspaper and periodicals published throughout the world are printed in English. In Georgia negroes pay taxes on between £1,000,000 and £1,500 000. In Louisiana they pay a tax upon £5, ! 000,000. The wholesale value of oysters sold annually in Boston is £190,000; in New York, £550,000. Boston has 12,896 gas lamps, and 8,587 of them were broken last year. San Francisco has 5,423 gas lamps, of which 5,000 ere lighted when the moon does not shine. |
