Some time it will be remembered, the Northern pipers informed us that Sydkey Taiwhakga was making a collection among the Natives to enable Tiira to proceed to England with a petition to the Queen, signed by many of the most influential Native Chiefs of New Zealand, complaining of the persistent breaches by the Government of New Zealand of the Treaty of Waitangi. Many Europeans thought the idea a preposterous one, but events shew that it was not so. The money has been collected, and Sydmet Tai whang a and a few of his partisans sailed from Melbourne last Monday in the Orient steamship Cotopaxi, with a view to the presentation of this petition to the Houses of Parliament. Tat whang a. intends to try to get his ease taken up by Mr Bright, Bir David Wedderbubn, and other prominent men, and also by the Aborigines’ Protection Society. He is anxious to get it taken up while Mr Gladstone, with the Liberal Ministry, is still in office. The petition is addressed “ To Ker Majesty Victoria, the Good Queen of England, and Empress of India, Greeting’’’
