New Plymouth, May 12. The case of Gallagher charged with manslaughter, was concluded yesterday. The judge commenced his summing up at six o’clock, concluding at seven, when the jury retired. At 8.15 the jury returned into court with a verdict of “ not guilty, and the prisoner was discharged. This being the last case the court adjourned sine die. Alexandra, May 12. In response to a message from Tawhiao, all Europeans here assembled at Whatiwhatihoe this morning'
After waiting some time they sent in a messenger asking when the korero would begin. Te Ngakau came out and said, “ I have come out to announce just as the Native Lands Court do, to all assembled here, that the court is opened, but will adjourn till to-morrow, in accordance with all your European usages.” On expressing disgust with the proceedings, and asking the reason, it was alleged that some of the Ngatimamapotos had not arrived, but believed that the chiefs are anything but agreed what action should be taken. Wahanui is strongly opposed to selling, and it is understood that Rewi has been persuaded to deny his recent utterances about submitting titles to the decision of the Court. Wahanui says he would like the title ascertained, but always in the past the surveys have been followed by sales of land. If he could see some way of securing land be would not be so strongly opposed to its opening, but they have been so often deceived by Natives selling when Crown grants were issued, that he is fearful of taking any steps towards making Native titles negotiable.
