Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY' TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1882

A report has been received by the Borough Council from Dr. Hector’s office on the water sent from the Waiherere stream for analysis. The substance of the report is that the water, although rather hard, and containing a considerable proportion of organic matter, is perfectly J good and suitable for domestic purposes. Some little merriment and chaff took place when tiro May< rread out the re. ort in full, with all its hard technical expressions. Councillor Tutchen said he was just as wise after hearing the report read as he was before. Some discussion then took place as to the necessary preliminaries to obtaining a water supply, and a Waterworks Committee composed of Councillors Townley, Tutchen, and Lewis was appointed to carry them out. Of course the ratepayers will have to be consulted before the loan necessary to the furtherance of the work can be applied for ; but there would appear to be very little dissent from the opinion of its vital necessity. Without a doubt property would be enhanced in value, and insurance rates would sensibly decrease. Money for municipal works is easily obtainable at from to 6 per cent, in the Colony. And we are fully justified in looking forward twenty years, if necessary, for the repayment of any loan of this nature, with a lively appreciation of the probabilities of an influx of population and a proportionately increased municipal revenue. With these, and the valuable facts relating to the sanitary side of the question, in view, we think the ratepayers will fairly meet she Borough Council in the matter, and aid by every means in their power the immediate execution of so valuable and vitally necessary a scheme.
