On and after the 7th of May, the Telegraph Office will only be opened once on Sunday, viz., from 10 to 10.30 a.m.
Mr Haase, Manager of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, advertise that a call has been made of 3d per share payable at the Company’s Office, on Wednesday, 19th May.
We learn that Messrs Coleman and Clarke, Trustees of Read’s estate, have instructed their solicitor, Mr Ward, to take the necessary steps to appeal in the case decided by Mr Price in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, on Tuesday re the Kairoru No. 1 block. It will be remembered that the Trustees relied upon a certificate of title under the Land Transfer Act. We would draw the attention of our readers to an an announcement in our advertising columns by Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co, as to important entries for their weekly horse sale on the 6th. The well-known horse Roebuck is to be submitted to public competition with his engagements, as is also a fast little mare, by name Vixen, sire Zanibula, and a Benathalath filly. There are also some good youngster to be offered. The Mastodon Minstrels gave a “ sacred concert ” at Dunedin on Good Friday. One of the items was a ditty, entitled, “ Wasn’t that a wide river,” which contains the following:—“lf you want to make old Satan run, just step uplbehind him with the Gospel gun.” This is what the Dunedin Slar calls a “ quaint melody.”
Mr Archibald Forbes, the famed war correspondent, will commence his lecturing tour through the Australian Colonies and New Zealand, beginning in May. The course will consist of five lectures —viz., ■“ Inner Life of a War Correspondent,” “ Kings and Princes I have mot,” “ Warriors I have known,” “ The Armies of Europe,” and “ Lecturing Experiences in both Hemispheres,”
