The New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), report as follows on the past month’s transactions : — WOOL. When our last report was issued the February series of the wool sales was progressing in London. It has now closed at firm rates, and from this fact, and the anticipations of short supplies from Australia, and it is expected that the next sales —to commence on the 16th May—will be equally satisfactory to the series just terminated. SHEEPSKINS. Wellington.—Supplies are still short, and parcels of all descriptions find ready sale. At our last sale, clean cross-breds fairly wooded made sfd, and coarse, heavy skins 4|d to 4£ per lb. Pelts from 7|d to 14d each, according to condition. Auckland.—There have been no public sales, and transactions passing have been confined to private sales of small lots at about •ate rates. TALLOW AND FAT. The depression which existed in the Home markets when we last wrote appears to have given place to greater activity, and prices in London have advanced to 45s for mutton and 42s for beef. Wellington.—All parcels find ready sale at following rates : —Mutton, £3U ; good firm mixed, £27 to £2B ; and inferior, £25 to £26 per ton. Napier.--£3l per ton has been offered for a parcel of mutton tallow, but £32 is asked. Auckland. —Values have undergone no quotable change since last month. No public sales have been held, and private transactions have not been extensive. HIDES. The London market is reported unchanged, with a limited demand, and the same may be said of the Colonial trade. Wellington.—The market has again been fully supplied, and as tanners have large stocks on hand, business is not quite so brisk. We quote for well-conditioned salted parcels 3yd ; kip hides, 3d to 3id ; dry hides, 2|d per lb. Napier.—Values continue much the same as for the last few months, prices ranging from 3d to 4|d per lb, according to weight and quality. Auckland. —Dealings have been limited at from 3d to 4|d per lb for small lots sold privately. GRAIN and GRASS SEED. Christchurch.—Great animation has characterised the grain market, which was only temporarily interfered with by the Easter holidays. All classes of cereals have been largely dealt in, especially wheat and oats, as noted below. Oats : Prices have continued to harden, and although there has been somewhat of a relapse in Melbourne after the rapid advance in that market, there is every prospect of values holding here. At our auction sale we placed 9,000 at 3s 3d to 3s 6d, and prices may now be quoted at 3s 2d to 3s 4d for good feed, and 3s 4d to 3s 6d for prime milling. Auckland. —Wheat has been coming forward slowly, sales have been made up to 4s lOd per bushel. Oats are moving at 3s 8d to 3s lOd per bushel. Napier.—Rye grass is easier, but very few good samples are now offering. Prices vary from 4s for inferior to 5s 3d for good seed, provincial grown ; and 6s to 6s 6d for Poverty Bay. Cocksfoot is also scarce, and selling at 5| per lb.
