A SCHOLMASTER SENTENCED TO DEATH.
At Wagga Wagga recently, a Yerong schoolmaster named Plummer, was placed upon his trial for criminally assaulting Ada Baxter, a girl 11 years of age, ami a pupil at his school. ’1 he fayts given in evidence are almost without parallel. The prisoner read his defence, and said the injury tc the girl Baxter was seif-inflieteA - He pointed to the fact .there, were twentv-seven scholars in the school at time, who saw nothing.occur.. He said the case was trumped up by the railway men because he wrote an article in a country paper headed “ Felterism,” which cast aspersions upon their class. A number of little boys and girls-at-tending the school were examined. The doctor’s evidence planted clearly to the fact of a criminal offence having been perpetrated, His Honor reviewed the evidence at’very great length.“ The jure, after a short absence, returned into court with a verdict of .guilty. The prisoner was sentenced to death, and his Honor held ,'oiit not the slightest hope of mercy, and said the ease was the most atrocious on record in the annals of the Colony.
