The operations of the Lands Court have been mainly confined to the sub-division of blocks of land which have previously been dealt with by the same Court under different Judges, from time to time. The great stimulus to this desire for the sub-division of these blocks into smaller ones which now actuates the Natives is no doubt in a great measure the proceedings of the Native Lands Settlement Company, the principles of which are perhaps as yet but imperfectly understood, excepting by those who take an interest in a movement which bears large promise of successful issues to the prosperity of the district. Blocks of 10,000,19,000, and 30,000 acres have been successfully dealt with, and an amount of tact, perseverance, and labor has been exercised by those who liave interested themselves in these proceedings, well worthy the warm thanks of the community. The Natives have cordially co-operated, and their ■continued presence for so long a time has been of material advantage to many during a period of comparative depression. Native land business involves a considerable outlay, and money is certainly not less wanted in Gisborne than elsewhere. We will endeavor to give some account of the work actually got through after the decision of the Court is known in the large Maraetaha block No. 2. In the meantime the persons conducting these negotiations are entitled to the support of the community.
