(FROM OUR OWN correspondents). Auckland, April 14. The train from here to the Waikato was thrown off the line near Pukekohe this morning, through colliding with cattle. A horsebox containing two men and a horse was thrown down an embankment. The men escaped, but the horse has not yet been extricated. The line is much damaged, the rails being bent double, and the sleepers smashed. Tne news of Sir George Grey being sent for has created great excitement amongst the King Natives, and “ Kapai Grey ” is now heard on all sides. CmnsTCHUncit, April 14. The Mayor’s ball in the Exhibition Building last night was attended by 750 people, including Lady Gordon. Miss Gordon, and Major Knollys. The ball was a great success. Mr Stead has resigned his seat on the Handicapping Committee. Sir George Grey will submit to the Governor on meeting him a list of names for the New Ministry. It is reported that Mr Downie Stewart is likely to be Attorney-General without a seat in the House. Some more pictures have arrived for the Exhibition, including one of Leda, by Jourden, said to be the finest in the Melbourne Exhibition. Dunedin, April 14. An important libel case, in which a leading Mortgage Assignee and a Member of the Legislature are plaintiffs, and a well-known contractor defendant, comes on for trial on Monday. The damages are laid at £lO,OOO. The Union Steamship Company received a cablegram from London dated the 12 inst., advising that the Manapouri has put into Lisbon with her engines disabled, but that repairs are being proceeded with, and she will get away on the 25th inst., so that her arrival in Melbourne will be looked for about the sth of June.
