COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Cook County Council was held on Thursday evening. Present: Cr. Johnson (Chairman), Crs. Ferris, Westrup, Clark, Milner, and Gannon. The minutes of last meeting were read aud confiamed. CORRESPONDENCE. To Messrs. Brassey and Fraser, re appointment as Solicitors to Council. To Taranaki County Council, re Hospital subsidy. To Colonial Secretary, re valuation. From P. Bond, asking for refund of 15s rates ; postponed till next meeting. From Wairoa County Council, re Settlement of Native Lands Titles ; received. From Crown Lands, Department, re Dealings with Crown Lands, rating of Native Lands; received. From Waikahu Highway Board, re prohibition of importation of sheep —endorsing Cr. Chambers’s motion. From R. Colebrook, complaining of tramway crossing and drain opposite his property; acknowledged in terms of Engineer’s report. From W. L. Rees, application for payment of account; referred to Solicitor. From Jas. Orr, re erection of fencing across Mangatu and Rangatira Roads, near his homestead ; resolved that Fraser’s trustees be requested to grant use of a road through Puhatikotiko. PAYMENTS PASSED. E. O. King £lO 6s. and £5; O. B. Hubble, £5; T. W. Bilham, £2 2s. ; R. White, £6; P. Richardson, £2 2s. ; W. Ratcliffe, £2 2s. ; T. Forsyth, £2 2s. ; C. Wilkinson, £L 10s. ; Craig, £l2 4s. 6d.— total £469 2s. 6d. The following tenders were then opened, but none were accepted : — O. B. Hubble, £985; M. Boland,£9so; C. 1). Berry, £799. It was moved by Cr. Gannon, and seconded by Cr. Clarke, “ That Mr Rolleston be communicated with re supply of funds.” Carried. 50 chains road and drain formation Gisborne-Wairoa Road, C. Patterson, 29s 6d per chain, accepted. Section No. 1, no tender ; section No. 2, Mr. Price, 4s per chain, accepted ; section No. 3, Mr. Price, 2s 6d per chain, accepted ; sectio No. 4, none accepted; section, No. 5, Watts and Bell, I s 6d per chain, accepted ; section No. 6, McLeod and Hubble, 5s per chain, accepted : section, No. 7, Witters, Is 9d per chain ; section No. 8, Witters, Is 9d per chain, accepted ; section No. 9, Witters, Is 9d per chain, accepted. prohibition or importation of SHEEP. Cr. Johnson spoke strongly on Cr. Chambers’s motion re prohibition of importation of sheep from Auckland, and moved that a letter be written to the Government asking them to take steps in the matter by issue of prohibitory order in Council until Auckland be proclaimed clean. Mr Clarke seconded. Carried. DELAYED WORKS. Cr. Ferris asked for information re work delayed (on accepted tenders) by successful tenderers. Does the work revert to the next lowest tenderer ? The Chairman explained that they cannot interfere until expiry of contract- time, but thought the work should be hurried on. BOROUGH COUNCIL AND COUNTY COUNCIL —GRAVEL (oXENHAM’s) CONTRACT. Cr. Westrup moved that a Committee consisting of Crs. Gannon, Clarke, and the Chairman be appointed to consider the matter. Cr. Clarke seconded. Carried. EXTENSION OF TIME. The Engineer recommended an extension of time to Mr Williams for completion of his contract for fourteen days, No. 1 Wairoa road. Granted. SUPERIOR METAL. The Chairman mentioned that Mr L. Williams had kindly volunteered to point out certain places where he thought better metal than the Council had seen yet, could be excavated, and recommended that his offer be accepted. OBJECTION TO PAY RATES. Mr Warren mentioned that Mr Livingstone objected to payment of certain rates, as being in excess of Road Board rates, for his property in Te Arai. Adjourned to next meeting for solicitor’s opinion in the meantime.
A COMPLAINT. Mr Warren complained of the ill working of by-law referring to pounding and slaughtering of cattle, finding it impossible to get either returns or money. Postponed till next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
