AMUSING STORY OF ELOPEMENT.

A few years ago, a retired sea captain, well-known in Liverpool, was obliged, through illness, to go into one of the local hospitals. Whilst there he formed the acquaintance of one of the Burses, and was so impressed with her kindness to him that when he recovered he proposed to her, and was accepted, and they were married. She had a little money, and they took a public-house in the neighbourhood of the Sailor’s Home. A few weeks ago the husband formed the acquaintance of a gallant man-of-war’s man, and the friendship ripened so fast over their mutual yarns, that the friend was invited to the house as a guest. The next thing was the disappearance of the wife, the visitor, and the cash-box. The husband lost no time in making inquiries, and traced them to a neighbouring port, were they were living together in a comfortable lodgings. A scene ensued, but the lady flatly refused to return, though she generously offered her husband a portion of the contents of the cash-box ; and with this he was obliged to be content and to return. A few days before the lady went away she had given a servant into custody on a charge of theft, and in order to prove the case she had to come back to Liverpool and appear against her. In the court the husband made another appeal to his erring wife, but she refused to have anything to do with him. and went back to her lover. It may be stated that the charge against the servant girl wag not substantiated.
