Cricket Match.
PUBLICANS V. BREWERS. This long anticipated event came off yesterday at Roseland, and resulted in a victory for the retail tradesmen, who, however, were materially assisted by several gentlemen not unknown in cricketing circles. Although it is often stated that we have a plethora of hotels, a glance at the appended score will show that very few hotel-keepers rolled up on this occasion. There is, we are informed, to be a return match, when the Brewers hope to be more successful. The match was won by 9 runs and three wickets. A most enjoyable day was spent, and both visitors and players were delighted with the day’s pleasure. PUBLICANS.— Ist Immiwqs. Dr. Burton is progressing very slowly to* wards recovery, Sarah Bernhardt fainted in "Dame anx Camelias ’* at Genoa. She spat blood, and t- e audience cried "enough 1” and quitted the theatre. The well-known racehorse " My Dream,” went up to Auckland yesterday by the s.s. Oreti in charge of Dick Wheeler, to prepare for her engagement* at the Auckland Easter Meeting. Keepers of shooting galleries in America set, up imitation Guiteaus for targets, and thus draw crowds of ferocious marksmen. In Cleveland, “ citizens who never before shot at a mark pay for the privilege of plugging Guiteau in the abdomen ” The evidence against a criminal at St. Louis was so conclusive that his counsel made no speech in his defence, knowing that nothing could be said in his favor. This proved a lucky course, for one of the jurors refused to convict, saying that the prisoner must be innocent, else his lawyer would have spoken for him. Mr. Donald Murray, was employed stowing grass seed in the N. Z. Loan and Mercantile store on the lower wharf, yesterday, when the uppermost bags toppled over and fell upon him, breaking an ankle. He was removed to the Settler's Hotel, where Dr. Leggatt attended to the requirements of the case. Wo notice with pleasure that Mr D. Dinan the enterprising host of the Kaiteratahi Hotel is making improvements to hie house of a nature which will render it one of the most popular resorts in the country. The old portion of the house is being removed for the purpose of replacing it by a more commodious building, and the travelling public will now be able to appreciate the accommodation which has hitherto been wanting in this locality.
