LAUNCH OF THE MAHINAPUA.
On the 31st December Messrs. William Denny and Brothers launched from the Leven Shipyard, Dumbarton, a steel twin-screw steamer •of 456 tons gross register, for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, which on leaving the ways was named Mahinapua, by Miss Janet Denny, of Helenslea, daughter of Mr. Peter Denny, senior partner of the firm. The dimensions of the vessel are : —Length between perpendiculars, IGO feet ; breadth {moulded),2oft. 10in.; depth (moulded), 13ft. -4-in. The vessel will be fitted by Messrs. Denny and Co., Dumbarton, with two pairs of compound surface-condensing epgines, haying cylinders I7in. and 30in. diameter, and 2 lin. stroke. The Mahinapua is intended for the New Zealand coasting trade, the exigencies of whic : have led to her construction on the twinscrew principle. She is built to the highest class at Lloyd’s, and her LOr. c t.ruction has been personally superintended by J, Darling, Superintendent to the Union Steamship Company •of New Zealand.
