AVki.i.inoton, March 17. A cottage occupied by one Monaghan, carter, was destroyed by fire last night. The origin of the fire was an explosion of a kerosene lamp, occasioned by the upsetting uf the table. All the maps, plans, etc., for the Wcllington- Manawatu railway arc now finally approved of by both parties, and the seal of the Colony will be affixed to the contract at a meeting of the Executive Council to-day, after the contract has been signed and sealed by the company. Dineuin', March 17. A house belonging to a miner named Ellis, near Cromwell on the Northern Goldfields, was burned down yesterday, and a child was burned to death in the flames. At Port Chalmers yesterday, the Union Company’s steamer Waitaki ran into the tug Kopatai, cutting her down to the water's edge. The AVaitaki was slightly damaged, but able to proceed on her voyage to Timarti in the evening. The Kopatai was built in Scotland in 1876, for the Otago Towing Company, and is of 158 tons register ; she has been slung and floated between two lighters. -In inquirywill be held.
An accident, which might have been attended with serious result.*, occurred on the Palmerston cricket-ground a few diiys ago. While nt praclire|onc of the batsmen “skied” a ball, and two of the fieldsmen running after it from op|Mjsitc directions came into collision. Both were st untied, and one, a young man named W. Wren, remained insensible for two hours. The New Zealand Wrtdeiian for this month has the following : — One of the examiners in church history reports having given the question, “ What wsis the nature of the Pragmatic Sanction ?” aud having received the comprehensive reply, “The Lord knows.” The examiner does not dispute the statement of the examinee, but fancies the yuuug gentleman will know belter a:al Lua-;.
