Volunteer intelligence.
The Monthly Inspection Parade of the J Battery Volunteer Artillery was held yesterday afternoon, in the Government Paddock, by Capt. Porter, commanding the district. There was a goodly muster of Volunteers, under Capt. Winter. The men presented a good and soldierly appearance, and were put through company, bayonet, and field-gun exercise by Capt. Winter. The muster roll was called over by Capt. Porter, the Band meanwhile discoursing some very sweet music. The various evolutions were gone through in a manner reflecting great credit upon officers, instructor, and men, particularly that of mounting and dismounting the gun, which was performed in the highly creditable time of Imin. 4see. Some smart showers fell during the manoeuvres, not, however, in sufficient quantity to put an end to them. After the inspection the Corps, headed by the Band, marched with the guu to the Drill Shed, where they dismissed. The Volunteers need encouragement. They arc painstaking and attentive in their drills, and deserve more attention from the Government than they have experienced up to the present time. They sadly need a field-piece, and are thoroughly entitled topossession of one. We believe Colonel Whitmore when here made a promise that a gun should be issued for their exclusive use. Up to the present time nothing further has been heard about it. Perhaps Colonel Whitmore will be glad to be thus gently reminded of his promise, for the fulfilment of which the Volunteers of Gisborne are anxiously on the look out.
