DEATH OF LADY FERGUSSON.
Ik reference to the death of Lady Fergusson, the wife of Sir James Fergusson, the Governor of Bombav, at Parell, India, on Sunday, Bth January, the Bom Jay Gazette has the following particulars : —“ The fatal illness (cholera) declared itself on the Saturday forenoon previous, when Lady Fergusson informed Dr. Findlay that she did not feel very well. He was struck by her appearance, especially by a sunken look about the eyes, and asked her to go and lie down and put herself under treatment at once. He immediately sent for Dr. Blane, and, pending his arrival, treated the patient for cholera, the symptoms of which were unmistakable. Dr. Blane arrived in about an hour, and Lady Fergusson was then already in a state of collapse. She rallied, however, and strong hopes were entertained of her recovery until midnight. At that, time the pains of labor declared themselves, and soon a child was born, dead. From that time forth there was really no chance of recovery. Dr. Henry Cook was called in, and everything possible was done, but the patient never rallied from the collapse consequent upon the shock. The state of collapse wns profound, and death supervened soon after one o’clock on the Sunday. Both Miss Fergusson and Miss Richman, Lady Fergusson’s sister, had been sent to Malabar Point on Saturday evening, and, except her maid, Lady Fergusson was quite alone. Lady Fergusson had come down from Mahableshwar in order to have the best advice in her approaching accouchement. It was only on the Friday before her death that she drove over to Malabar Point to see if her rooms there were ready, a i she was to have moved thither to-day (Monday). All the business places of Bombay were closed in memory of the sad event, and all approaching festivities were postponed.”
