Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council took place on Tuesday evening last. The following Councilwere present:—His Worship the Mayor; Crs. E. K. Brown, Townley, Clayton, Tucker, Berry, Somervell, Lewis, and Whinray.
The minutes of both the last ordinary and a special meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received and read from Messrs Brassey and Fraser, with reference to the Poverty Bay Cricket Club taking a lease of the Recreation Ground for a term of seven years. The Club was aware that it could not obtain a lease for seven rears, but wished to take a lease for 12 months, renewing it every 12 months. They would keep the ground and fences in repair, and would construct a drain through the "pilch.” Cr. Brown thought a Committee should be appointed to meet and confer with the Cricket Club Committee with regard to this matter, and proposed Crs. Lewis, Townley, and Somervell meet the said Committe, and report the result at the next meeting of the Council. His Worship the Mayor seconded the proposition which was carried. FIRE ENGINE. His Worship the Mayor said he did not think anything could be done as regards the purchasing of one of Merryweathers’s sleain fire engines, and would like to know what the Insurance Companies intended doing in the matter. Cr. Tucker was of the opinion that the Insurance Companies would not render any assistance, and that not three-quarters of the ratepayers cared a snap of their fingers as to whether an engine was procured or not. He thought the Insurance Companies should find the engine, and the Borough the water and brigade. Cr. 'Townley thought that the Council by getting an engine, would be studying their own interests, as every fire reduced the rates of the Borough. Cr. Tucker said that the line must be drawn somewhere, and the purchase of an engine must be made so as to fall equally upon the ratepayers, and would be in favor of a special rate being struck for the purpose.
Cr. Lewis said he should like to see the engine obtained at once, and he had no doubt the Insurance Companies would support it.
GREY STREET (WATKANAE) BRIDGE. After a great deal of discussion on the question of right-of-way from the above bridge towards the beach, which was refused by the Native grantees in the Waikanae block, ‘Cr. Townley proposed, “That Cr. Tucker be requested to see what he could do towards getting a right-of-way allowed by the Natives from the Government road to the beach, and that they be informed t hat the road was to be onlyone chain instead of one and a half chains wide.” This was seconded by Cr. Whinray, and carried. The Engineer’s report on different works in the Borough, and a report on the Waihiriri stream, and also a report on the same from Messrs. AV. Tattley and 11. J. Reynolds, were read, and on the motion of Cr. Clayton, seconded by C. D. Berry, and carried, were adopted; also, that tlie thanks of the Council be accorded to Messrs. Tattley and Heynolds. FIRE inspector’s REPORT. The Fire Inspector’s report was read, in which he detailed the circumstances of the late fires, and asked that Mr. Fellows, who acted bravely at the fire at Mrs Browne’s shop, be allowed compensation for the loss of a coat and injuries sustained. It was resolved that the thanks of the Council be accorded to Mr Fellows, and that a letter be written to the Union Insurance Company asking that body to remunerate him. The tenders for the ferry and weighbridge were as follows:—-Alfred Ledger, £5 per month: James Mcßride,
£6 10s per month ; Andrew Gregg, £8 13s per month. The tender of Mr Gregg was accepted. Cr. Lewis gave notice of motion that he would, on next Council night, move that steps be taken for the erection of a dangerous goods goods store, • and that it be taken into consideration at their next meeting.
