MURDER AND SUICIDE.
Result of Unrequited Love.—A Young Lady Nineteen Years oe Age Shot. Morpeth February 16. About 3 o’clock this morning a man named Grimley effected an entrance into the residence of Mr Pettit of this town, who, unfortunately, was away from home, and committed a horrible deed, of which the following is a brief accountGrimley, as stated got into the house knowing of Mr Pettit’s absence, and stole quietly upstairs until he reached the room of Miss Pettit, who was asleep. He opened her bedroom door, making little or no noise, and deliberately fired two shots at her breast, both taking effect and killing her instantly. After committing this fiendish act, Grimley rushed from the house, persued by the intimates, who had not time to realise the situation, or even know if their young relative was injured or not ; but they could not overtake him. Grimley- went off to East Maitland, where he resided, and was found dead, having shot himself. The excitement is intense, and great sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents, who havelost agooddaughter.and who was such a general favourite. Miss Pettit has only just attained hcrlllth year and her terrible and early death at the hand of afanatic, whoseonly reason was her refusal to marry him, has caused a feeling of intense sorrow.
