PATTI IN AMERICA.
Patti, after her first New York concert, wanted to pack up her traps and sail for Europe. But a friend advised hereto give another concert at reduced rales, and undertook all risks himself. Then Manager Abbey came on the scene, and offered £BOO a night ; but the diva refused, asking £1,200.' Eventually a contract was signed for 30 concerts at £lOOO per concert, and all travelling and other expenses ; MiAbbey to have the right ol renewal. At prices ranging from Ss to £1 (the best) she has drawn excellent audiences. It is reckoned that before any profit can be gained Manager Abbey must have £1,600 houses. The £lOOO a night that Patti receives covers her company, but not more than £5O is put down for the lot, Nieolini included. Deducting this, the prima donna will receive £28,000 for 30 concerts, certainly by far the largest sum ever paid to tiny prima donna. She told a NewYork interviewer that of all the characters in her repertoire she preferred Elsa in Lohengrin, but the added, “ I don’t mean to sing Wagner’s music until the last year of my public career. It is severe on the voice when one sings it constantly, and 1 must save my voice. When I appear in Wagner's operas I shall enjoy doing so, because I like the music ; but they shall be my last public notes.” The diva has signed a contract to sing in the Messiah at Cincinnati!, at Christmas, for the extraordinary fee of 7000 dols., or £1,400 for a single concert
Steps are being taken to obtain the extradition of the Marquis of Huntly, charged with fraud, and believed to be in Russia.
