ENEMIES WITHIN OUR GATES.
“ The A’agabond ” thus writes frnm Sydney to the Auckland Star t under the above head : “The Russian inen-of-w ar have left us and gone to Melbourne where the Afnka is 4 o be docked and undergo extensive repairs—at least that will be the nominal reason of their long sojourn in Melbourne. But daily we hear lit’le items which tends to swell the circumstantial evidence that the visit of the Muscovite vessels is one of e/r/ricw/n/e, which may '♦•ad to great danger in the future, i he future soi disant scientist, Dr. or Baron .Marlray, takes away with him plans of all the fortilira*ions, torpedo works, Ac. He folded I’arki« and the gentleman who were appointed trustees of the Government station at Watson’s Bay most admirably. Some people here tell me ibat the Baron had a perfect right to do this ; that in time of peace we should deny to none the opportunilies to visit all our for* tifications. I question this—at all events I know the Kussians will allow no stranger to inspect their forts at Vla livostock and Petropaulovski. But our authorities are too innocent. One officer holding a high command in our defence force did strongly protest against Baron Macleay’s action, but was met with an outburst of Saxon English from Sir John Kobertson, to whom he complained.” For confinuation of ne.trs see Ith page
