Commercial.

Standard Office, Ped Street, Gisborne, 17th Feb. Mr. W. K. McLean reports on the share market as follows : —For the past fortnight few transactions have taken place. In Southern Cross sales by auction, 200 forfeited shares realised 4s Gd to 4s 7d. Small lots have since changed hands at 5s to 5s Gd, holders demanding in some instances as high as 6s Gd, while buyers offer only 5s 3d to os 6d. In such an unsettled state of the market but little business can be expected. The visit of the managing director to the company’s grounds will, no duubt, result in bringing prices to their proper level, In South Pacifies there have been no transactions to record. An offer of 3a Gd has been made for a large block of contributing shares, but holders are firm in asking 4s to 4s Gd. Paid-up shares in this company are held fast at 6s 6d to 7s. The resumption of work at these mines, which is expected will take place shortly, will doubtless have the effect of hardening prices.

Messrs Pitt and Bennett report that fair prices were realised at their cattle sale on Wednesday last, at Makara a: —Calves (weaners), £2 ; 12 to 18 months, £3 5s to £3 10s two year old steers £3 10s to £3 15s; two year old heifers £3 10s to £4 7b Gd ; two to three year old store steers, £4 10s to £5 10a : two to three year old store heifers, £4 to £6 ; beef about 17s 6d per lOOlbs ; milking cows, £7 to £8 108 ; 117 head were sold.

Carlaw Smith and Co. held a sale of clocks, watercolors, &c., at their mart on Thursday, and good prices were realised.
