HAWKE’S BAY STOCK AND STATION REPORT,- January, 1882.

M. R. Miller reports as follows :—The past month has been an exceedingly busv one in sales and deliveries of sheep, and for young breeding ewes the demand continues to exceed the supply. Fat wedders are at preplent if ul, but boiling down operations will soon relieve holders of this class of stock. In cattle there has been little business of anv consequence doing from the fear that the present dry weather may continue for some time, and from the fact that there is less demand for fat cattle from Auckland than heretofore I at this season ; however, the demand for that market is expected to increase further on in the year, and the local consumption is increasing steadily: on these grounds we may look for a more active demand arising ere long. The harvest will, there is no doubt, realise expectations, and it is pleasant to note that we have a greater extent of land in cereals this year than in any preceding season. In rye- | grass seed there is a good yield, and parcels have already changed hands at is 6d, 4s 9d, ; and 5s per bushel for extra quality, and cocks- 1 foot at 3|d to 4d and 41d per lb. Station Properties.—There are several buyers in the market at. present, and negotiations are pending that will likely lead to business ; aul it is expected that the high reserve p'aced on the Otago leasehold runs to be offered by auction at the end of February will have the , effeat of directing more attention to properties

here. The attention of practical men has been | drawn to the sate of portion of the Rissington j estate, about 40,000 acres of which will be sold in various sized lots of from 400 to 4000 acres in each. Plans will be issued about I6th February, and the sale by auction will not take place till six weeks after, so as to allow full time for inspection. On the 26th I sold 29 quarter-acre sections near Woodville township from £5 10s to £l9 10s each. Wool.—Home market news is in favor of steady prices being maintained, but an absence of speculative purchases. Messrs Goldsboruug i’s Melbourne reports are more favorable, and account sales from that firm just to I hand show an unexpected advance on light ' greasy lots sent there. ! Sheep.—Store merino wedders, 2 and 4 j tooth, 7s ; 6-tooth, 6s; 8-tooth, 4s 6d to ss. I Ewes, young, only culls for wool, offering at I 6s 6d to 7s, but sales have been effected at 10s : for 2-tooth, 8s for 4-tooth, and 6s 6d lor 6 I tooth ; 8-tooth are still in the market for ■ Is 6d to 6s according to quality. Cross-bred i wedders, fat, 10s to 12 ; store do., 2-tooth, Bs. 4 and 6-tooth, 8s to 9s fid ; ewes, same class, ' 2-tooth, 9s 6d ; 4 and 6-tooth, 10s to 10s 6<l ; i 8-tooth, 7s to Bs. At the rates above quoted ’ I have placed, in conjunction with M. R. Miller and Potts, Waipawa, 25,250 store and fat sheep during past month, chiefly from flocks of Messrs St. Hill and Price, Williams, S. Johnston, Bridge, 11. 11. Russell, Lyons, Mackersey, Olrig, Harding, Ac., a considerable portion being for West Coast. Annual Ram Fair —Our annual Ram Fair, | held at Hastings on the 25th, attracted a great ! concourse of sheepfarmers, not only from our j own district, but also from other provincial districts, and purchases were freely made. From there being a very full supply of rams yarded prices were moderate. It is gratifying to note that local bred sheep carried a full share of the substantial honors of the day. They realised the highest average rates. Cattle. —Fat, 20s to 22s 6d per 1001 b ; store steers, little demand, at £3 and £4 10s for 1|- and and £6 5s to £6 10s for 3- and 4-year-olds, about equal proportions. Female stock from about 10s lo 20s under the above rates. Dairy Cows, £8 to £lO each. Horse Stock. —There is increasing demand for medium draught at £25 lo £3O; heavy do. £5O to £6O; light harness do., £l5 to £2O; useful hacks, £lO to £l2 ; good do., £2O to £25 ; light do. and packers, £5 to £7 each.
