A New York man recently sold his wife to a neighbor for a dollar. Some men seem to take a delight in swindling their neighbors. At Hampden the-other day asporting boniface, Mr Win. McCay, backed himself to walk any horse in the dis- j trict one mile for the sum of ten gtiin- | eas. The offer was taken up by Mr Joseph Culling, of Hillgrove. The; contestants met at the Moeraki Hotel, i and after a few of the usual prelimin- j aries, made a good start. The pedes- 1 train gained at least forty yards in the [ first hundred, after which the horse— ! an 18 years’ old one—gradually diminished rhe 'distance, till at the finish there was only about a dozen yards separating them. The time was 10 minutes 27 seconds. Some of the Oamaru district publicans, since the police took action in the matter -of adulterated liquors, 1 ] have adopted the plan of putting up : a .placard in the bar to inform custo-, , users that all drinks are adulterated ’ I water. A publican at Ngapara named ;i Cameron was proceeded against the: t other day for selfing whisky with 211] per cent, of water added, but thel t magistrate dismissed the case on the i ground that the notice given that all 1 liquors sold in the hotel were reduced c with water was sufficient under the q Aet. The police, in evidence, de- “ dared they had not seen any such 1 notice. " 1 L
