The Property Commissioner lias notified to Mr. Shrimpton, the local Post, master, that the instalments of the tax for the current year will be payable on February, the 15th, and March Ist next, respectively. If convenient persons may pay the two instalments a' the one time to Mr. Shrimptox at the Post Office. We would remind our readers that in the event of either or both instalments being overdue for fourteen days af’er the dates respectively appointed for payment ten per eent. interest will be added. The Goverment have, we feel assured, no inclination to inflict any unnecessary hardship upon the taxpayers, but under the circumstances, as the tai must he paid it would be just as well to pay it at the regular period of collection. A correspondent in a Southern paper, referring to the subject, asks: Is it through forgetfulness that the Commissioner has omit ted to name the rate of discount that would be allowed off the tax in the event of it being paid in advance? With an overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand a concession of this sort should not be omitted. It might make a difference in the item of bank interest, and would give taxpayers the opportunity of securing interest on idle money.
