WELLINGTON RACES.

(By Telegraph.) Thk first day’s races of the Wellington Jockey Club Summer Meeting, took place on Thursday last, and were a great success, the weather and racing was all that could be wished for, there was a numerous attendance of visitors ; when the Cup race was run their were about 2,500 people on the ground. Sweeps were not allowed openly, but several were indulged in on the sly, and the police did not seem very anxious to interfere with them. Messrs Hill and Poole both had totulisators on the ground One of the instruments in the paddock being Haye’s patent, a capital machine. The arrangements generally were very good, though the events might have been got off in better time. The following is the result of the first days racing : — Maiden Plate. Magnolia ... ... ... 1 This event resulted in a walkover, much to to the disgust of the spectators. Handicap Hurdles. Clarence ... ... ... 1 ■Agent 2 Scrutineer ... ... ... 3 The General and Totara also started for this race. Time—smias. 29i*ecs. Hack Huudlb Race. Totara 1 Stag 2 Jimray > Willington Cur. Hilda 1 Salvage 2 The Poet 8 Lady Emma, Sir George, Piscatorious and King Quail also started. There was great excitement over this race, which was a boi over. Time—3mins. 45secs, Hack Race. Annie J Taratahi > Flying Stakes. Mischief 1 Luna 2 Somnus 3 Won easily, the win being a very popular one. The total amount which passed through the totalizator during the day was £l,BlB, Second Day, Feb. 3rd. The weather was again beautiful for today’s racing, but the attendance was not so large, not more than 600 people being on the course. The following are the results Railway Stakes. Mischief 1 Luna 2 Lady Emma 3 This was the best race of the meeting* Magnolia was scratched. Hutt Park Stakes. Ladt Emma 1 Mavis ... ... ... ... 2 Slander Filly ... 3 Won by half a head, after a good race. Time—2-iisecs.
