BRUTAL TREATMENT OF CHILDREN.
The brutal treatment of children is ■one of the subjects just now prominently before the public. Sir William Harcourt has placed the questions of the St. Paul’s Industrial Schools in the hands of the Public Prosecutor, and there can be little doubt that the persons responsible for the atrocious treatment of the boys in this establishment will be proceeded against. A new instance of barbarity towards children has lately been brought to light at Constantinople. Through the instrumentality of Mr Littler several English children were found in the keeping of an acrobat in the Turkish Capital. They were packed away in a filthy room, their bodies were covered with bruises, the food allowed them was scandalously insufficient, and they were never permitted to go out except for the purpose of performance. This is not, it is to be feared, an isolated ease, and Mr Littler declares he has evidence that more than one parent is anxiously seeking children obtained by false pretences by these Arab scoundrels.
