CRIME IN IRELAND.

The November returns of crime in Ireland show 561 offences last year, against 520 this year with the Coercion Act. The decrease is chiefly in threatening letters, and the actual outrages are about 30 more, and the proportion has increased for December. The Irish farmers are more generally adopting the no rent policy, even on good estates, and the situation is, therefore, darker, because the reductions of the Land Court are proving unsatisfactory, while everybody is demanding that the Government shall do something further to restore law and order. The Tablet proposes the exaction from each town or district of a compensation for injury to persons as well as property. If a cow’s tail is cut, the district pays; but if a mail’s ears are shorn there is no compensation. This theme was discussed by the Government before the Tablet aired it, and may yet be dropped. •

It is all but certain now that the ■crops in North Otago and South Canterbury will be far below the average. In many places oats are not a foot high and very thin. Wheat has suffered less than oats, of which an exceptionally short crop may be anticipated. Rain might help the late crops, but not the earlier.
