Annual Elections of School Committees.

GISBORNE. The annual election of the Gisborne School Committee for the ensuing year took place on Monday evening last. The Rev. Mr McAra occupied the chair. The Chairman having explained the objects of the meeting, the minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. In the absence of Mr Piesse, the acting secretary, Mr W. Ratcliffe read tho following report Annual Report of the Gisborne District School Committee, January, 1882. Your Committe, in presenting this their annual report for tho past year, arc pleased to note that tho school under their control shows a marked improvement in its conduct and general efficiency over previous years. It is, however, only bare justice to Mr Thos. Morgan, the head master, to attribute this success to his thorough knowledge of the duties entrusted to him as the principal of the school, and to tho very able manner in which he has been supported by Mr Bull and Miss Mclntosh, the assistant teachers. A ineed of praise is also due to tho pupil teachers for the zealous way in which they have supported tho principal. It is very gratifying to note that three of Captain Russell’s prizes were won by pupils of the Gisborne School. During the past year your committee have again urged upon tho Government the necessity of providing for secondary education. With this object in view, another Bill was drafted and forwarded to Mr Allan McDonald, M.H.R., during the last session. He was then ably supported by the Hon. Randall Johnson, M.L.C., but was not able to pass it through the House, owing to the population of the district not being large enough. The matter will, however, be kept in view, and eventually a High School will be endowed in Cook County. Tho Board has acted in a most liberal manner, having voted the sum of £BO for re-painting the school, and for other improvements. The master’s dwelling is also to be enlarged at a cost of £l5O. Chimneys have also been erected at the school, so that the rooms may be warmed in the cold weather. The accounts, duly audited, will be presented to you, and explain themselves. Henry Lewis, Chairman pro tem. Mr J. Browne moved, and Mr M. Hall seconded, the adoption of the report, which was put and carried without further discussion. After the Inspector’s report was read, Mr J. Browne moved a vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, speaking of the members in eulogistic terms. Mr J. Somervell seconded the motion which was carried nem. dis. Mr 11. Lewis returned thanks on behalf of the committee. The next business was the election of a committee.
