CORRESPONDENCE

[We do not. hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed bp oar correspondents]. THE FERRY PUNT. TO THE EDITOR. Str, —Being the contractor for the new punt for the Borough Council, I have had a great deal of unpleasant supervision by certain people who, representing “Fellows and C 0.,” seem to think that the fact of their being “ Jack-in-the-Water ” men, must preclude a practical shipwright or any other competent person from using his enterprise and ability to procure employment in any branch of business, which interferes with what they call “ their vested rights.” As to Mr Fellows himself, the less he says the better for himself and the Council too. His exuberant tongue and his “ valuable opinion ” would not carry an atom of influence outside a barroom. Mr Fellows and his backers should remember the old proverb about “people who livem glass houses, Ac.” What about the “Gisborne White Elephant” and a few other “ ships ” whoso owners have been foolish enough to place in their hands. lam not given to rushing into print, or airing my poverty on a public platform, but I must say I heartily wish that these busybodies would pay as much attention to their own concerns as they have to mine and the Borough Councils. Finally, 1 may state that the punt has lain high and dry for the Engineer’s inspection, and if he is satisfied, I may safely count that the ratepayers will be so as well, in spite of the growls of “ Fellows and Co.—Yours, &c., R. Martin.
