(from our own correspondents). Napier, Jan. 23. A woman named Hall committed suicide on Saturday by throwing herself into the Tutaekuri River. Several people attempted to save the unfortunate woman, but were unsuccessful. At the inquest a verdict was returned that the deceased committed suicide while laboring under temporary insanity. Christchurch, Jan. 23. The cricket match commenced at noon today. The weather was glorious, and the ground in capital order, notwithstanding the recent, heavy rain, the only fault being that it played rather dead. The English won the toss and elected to go in. Ulyett and Barlow were first to go to the wickets. Runs came freely during the first ten minutes ; afterwards the fielding became very smart, and the scoring slow. After making 19 Ulyett was badly missed by Cotterill at long field. At 1.15 the score was 35. Runs now began to come more freely, and at 1:40 the score was 60, Ulyett and Barlow being still at the wickets. Ulyett 35, Barlow 25 ; extras 2. Dunedin, Jan. 23. Heavy rain has fallen incessantly for the last 48 hours, and there is no sign of abatement. Kate Hargetts, wife of a cordial manufacturer, committed suicide to-day by cutting her throat and abdomen. She had been drinking.
