Pressure on our spare compels us to hold 'Over our leading article, several locals, and 'Correspondent's fetters. 'Councillor Townley gave notice that at the next meeting of the Borough Council he would move for the appointment of a solicitor to the Borough.
Councillor Clayton objects to horses being driven through the street. He intends bringing the question before the Council at the next meeting with a view to an abolition of the nuisance.
The question of lighting the streets of Gisborne will come before the Borough Council at their next meeting. Cr. Lewis has given notice of motion on the subject, also that suitable lamps for the purpoee be obtained. On Saturday next, the 21« t instant, Messrs Pitt and Bennett will sell, at their auction mart, 3 single bedsteads, 1 carpet, 1 saddle, 4 horse collars, and some entirely interesting books, Ar., Ac. At the meeting of the Gisborne Cricket Club held last evening, it was unanimously agreed to make preparations for the match proposed by the Napier Cricketers to take place in February. From the tone prevalent it may be safely assumed that no ill-feeling whatever exists between the Clubs. We are glad that such is the case. The indefatigable S. M. Wilson of the Albion Club Hotel, is determined to supply a long felt want From this day forth, he will run cabs from the Licensed Cabstand, obtained through his instrumentalitv from the local Borough. In future cabs will be obtainable for the conveyance of persons to all parts of the Borough between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. This a luxury that only requires to be felt to be thoroughly appreciated. The cabstand is opposite the Albion Club stables. The Masonic Hall is now the great centre of attraction. A large number of persons assembled there, yesterday, to view Professor Fraser’s huge collection of charts of tire human heads, and anatomical diagrams. Phrenologieally speaking, the collection is the most unique of the kind we have seen in Gisborne. -Charts of the heads of the celebrated men and women of history in all walks of life -are to be seen. There you will find the chart of the head of Socrates, tire eminent philosopher of Greece, and that of Sir Arthur Gordon, the anything but eminent Governor of New Zealand. On one side your eye rests upon the face of Lucretia Borgia, the terrible, and all the horrors of the Borgian family arise before one’s mind. On the opposite side is delineated the head and face of Florence Nightingale, the benevolent, and your thoughts are carried back to the Crimean svar, the terrible privations endured, the wounded soldiers and ambulance wagons. There are to be seen the drawings of the heads of men eminentsin polities, philosophy, science, end art; celebrated clergymen, criminals, and sceptics, all are on view. To those whose tastes lead them to the study of anatomy and philoaopy, there are some excellent charts that will bear contemplation. A promenade round the hall affords ample room for reflection. Mr Fraser will lecture again this evening.
