Poverty Bay Turf Club.
The nominations for the Poverty Bay Turf Club Meeting, 1882, took place at the Masonic Hotel, on Saturday evening last. The Honorary Secretary, Captain Ferris, was engaged receiving nominations up to 12 o’clock on Saturday night. There were a larger number of entries than any ever yet made for any races in Poverty Bay. This speaks well for the interest that is taken in racing matters in the district. For two events there were sixteen entries, and thirteen entries for one. Any nominations, bearing the post-mark of the 14:h January, will be accepted as formal. It is somewhat surprising that there were not a greater number of entries for the County Handicap Stakes. There should have been at least about twenty entries for this event. Being a handicap race, and specially set apart for locally bred horses, besides the entrance fee being only a pound, it was thought that keen competition would have been the result. It is expected that there will be a large number of acceptances, and some really excellent racing may be looked forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 21st and 22nd of February. The following are the nominations: — County Stakes :— Lizard, Jack, Flatcatcher, Luck’s All, Penguin, The Cat, and Director.
