(from our own correspondents). Dunedin, Jan. 12. Three davs’ cricket match commenced to-day. English Eleven against 18 of Dunedin. The Dunedin teain were disposed of for 84 runs ; the Englishmen have made 108 runs for loss of three wickets.
Auckland, January 13. Mr Knox, one of the Directors of the Sydney Sugar Refining Co., eame to Auckland by the steamer Hero-, and inspected the neighborhood with the view of selecting a site fora sugar refining factory, and has purchased a block of land at Kauri Point for the sum of £lOO. He expects that the pluat and buildings will absorb £200,000. . Patea, January, 13* A fight between some Natives and two Europeans occurred at Whenuakura Hotel last evening... Kcreopa, an ex-constable, was stabbed iu the hand, on account of which the other Maoris broke the windows of the Hotel, and took his part. The affair arose from a drunken squabble.
Nelson, January 13. A seven-roomed house in Wellington Street was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mr Mundy, the occupier, had his furniture insured iu the Norwich Union Office for £l5O, aud Mr H. D. Williams, the owner of the house, was insured in the Union office for a similar sum. The origin of the fire is unknown. Nothing saved. Wellington, Jan. 13. Argument iu tho personation case against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn was taken before tho Chief Justice this morning. His Honor said that a special verdict was one of guilty, and sentenced the accused to 1 hour’s imprisonment, sentence to take effect from the commencement of the session Lubb, who was arrested on a charge of stealing £lOO belonging to the firm of Tubb and Fergus of Timaru, was remanded to Timaru. The petition of Mr Tvess against the return of Mr Watson for Waikanu seat has been received bj' the Chief J ustiee.
The members of tho Government have, through the Premier, presented Mr George Beetham. M. H.R., with a valuable gold wateh and chain, in appreciation of his valuable services during 1880 ami 1881. The Government state that the delay in providing the means for fumigating the English mail at Auckland, is attributable to the Auckland Harbor Board , they having full power in tho matter, and the Government being unable to do anything in it without ' their sanction. The return of George Gerald Fitzgerald for Hokitika is gazetted. Jan. 13. The Herald says a rumor is current that an action involving £20,000, arising out of a recent failure in Dunedin, is to be commenced by a well-known company against a Dunedin firm. Among insolvencies this week are, Anderson Brothers, bootmakers, whose debts are £2,033, assets £1,185 ; and Thomas Black, jeweller, debts being £1,015, and assets £l,lOO.
