THIS IS TOO BAD.
Everybody remembers the dynamite scare and the grand speech made by Sir William Harcourt as to the discovery of the Goverment. According to the latest accounts from America, the whole affair is a hoax, or rather a plot, to frighten the English Government and to make money. It appears that the appeal of O’Donovan Rossa on behalf or the Dynamite Skirmishing Fund proved more successful than he ever expected, that with some of the proceeds of that fund he procured infernal machines and secretly shipped them to England, and that he as secretly gave information to the British Goverment, and got two thousand pounds reward. If ever a thing “ beat Banaher,” this does. The moral of the whole story is that even the welleducated members of the Government are no better, as regards national prejudices, than their inferiors in the social scale, and that there is nothing too atrocsous about Ireland and the Irish that they will not readily believe. —Universe.
