[Fuoh oua ows Coiuibspondsnts]. Sydney, Jan. 2. The race for TattersaH’s Cup was run to-day, and resulted, as follows: — Lord Orville, 1; Roeiuante, 2; Valetta, 3. Melbourne, Jan. 1. The New Year’s Day Meeting of the Victoria Racing Club took place to-day, at Flemington. The weather was cool, but unsettled. The racing was good. Normanby Stakes.—Navigator, 1; Solitude, 2 ; Boolka, 3. Midsummer Handicap.—Belladonna, 1; Guinea, 2; Swiveller, 3. Champion Stakes—Coriolanus, 1 ; Commotion, 2; Wellington, 3. The cricket match between the English team and the combined team of Australia was commenced to-day. The weather was fine and attendance very large. There was a capital wicket pitched, and the ground was in good order. The Englishmen went in first and their innings closed for 294 runs. The following are the full scores —- Bates, 58 ; Ulyett, 87; Selby, 55 ; Scotton, 21: Midwinter, 36; Shaw, 5 ; Peate, 4 ; extras, 7; total, 294. January 2. The cricket match was resumed today, and wlien the stumps were drawn the Australians had put together in the first innings 277 runs for the loss of only six wickets as against 274 of Aho Englishmen.; in the first innings, Horan not out for 106; Mun o'i scored 39; Bannerman, 38; ami Grillin, 3;). The weather to-day w:s fine but cold, and the atlendan<e again was very largo, it is expect'd that the match will be drawn. Jatwary 3. It has been arranged that the cricket match between the Englishmen anl the Australian Eleven, shall be played out, aitl the departure of the LT.C. s steamship A rawata has been postponed in order that the English cricketers may proceed by her to New Zealand. The cricket match was resumed today. The first innings of the Australians closed for 320 runs; Horan scored 124, and Palmer 34. The Englishmen went in for their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn they had put together 288 runs for seven wickets, as follows: —Ulyett 23, Caiow 33, Bates 40, Selby 70, 'Midwinter 4, Emmett 6, Shrewsbury 16, Scotton (not out) 13, Shaw (not out) 14 ; extras 12 —total 238. Peate and Dilling have yet to go in. The match will be resumed to-morrow.
New York, January 3. A serious disaster occcurred to-day at Shawsville, a small town in the State of Ohio. The floor of a room in which a large number of people were congregated gave way, and all were precipitated into space below 7 . Twenty persons were killed instantaneously, and fully 100 received injuries.
