Napier, Dec. 28. The annual Boxing Day Races took place at Hastings, on Monday last; the attendance was good. Maiden Plate.—Sydney, Ist; Love Not, 2nd ; Ohikakurewa, 3rd. Won easily. Handicap Hubdle Race.—Angler, Ist; Te Whetumarama, 2nd; A.G., 3rd. Won easily by two lengths. Hack Hurdles.—Jack Spratt, Ist; Nancy, 2nd ; Te Ana, 3rd. Won easily. Boxing Day Handicap.—Mischief, Ist; Prim, 2nd ; Merlin, 3rd. Mischief took the lead at the fall of the flag, and won in a canter by three lengths. Hack Race.—Kuni 1 ; Tim Whiffler 2 ; Countess 3. Railway Handicap.—Mischief 1, Soukar 2, Merlin 3. Won by a length. Consolation Handicap—Prim 1, Parawhenua 2, Soukar 3. Won very easily. The Hawke’s Bay Racing Club Summer Meeting took place at the Pakowbai on Tuesday last. The attendance was moderate. The following are the results : — Hurdle Race—Angler 1, A.G-. 2, Ruahia 3. This was a good race between Angler and A.G., terminating in a dead heat, in the run Angler won by a neck. ■ Maiden Plate.—Tim Whiffler 1, Ohikajkarewa 2. Two only started for this event, but it was a good race. Won by half a 1 length. Pakowhai Handicap.—Parawhenna 1, Angler 2, Sydney 3. Won after a good race by a length and a half. Trotting Match.—Otaira, 1, Taupo 2, Suttonite 3. Won easily. Christmas Stakes Handicap.—Prim 1, Merlin 2, Soukar 3. A grand race, won by a neck. Novel Race.—Tare 1, Tim Whiffler 2, Repudiator 3. Won by two lengths. The winner was sold by auction after the race fur £35.
Auckland, December 26. About 4,000 persons were present to-day at the Auckland Racing Club Summer Meeting at Ellerslie. The police suppressed all totalisators save those licensed by the Racing Club ; also all sweeps and games got up for profit, I but did not interfere with friendly sweeps. ■ Maiden Plate. —Othello 1, Miss Domett ■2, Envy filly 3. Won easily. Time, 2min. p 20sec. I Free Handicap.—Tim Whiffler 1, Hilda r 2, Lara 3. After a grand race Tim won by a length. Time Imin. 47fsec. Handicap Hurdle Race. —Rawenata 1, Lone Hand 2, Clarence 3. This was the most successful hurdle race ever run here. Won by a length. Auckland Cup Handicap.—King Quail 1, Hilda 2, Kenilworth 3. Won by a length. *l£rne 4min. Bsec. kailway Stakes.—Maid of Honor 1, Billingsgate 2, Tenambra 3. Maid of Honor went away with the lead, which she kept throughout, winning easily. Time Imin. 31jsec. Nelson, December 28. In the Interprovincial Cricket Match, the second innings of the Wellington men ended for 54 runs, Nelson winning the match by nine wickets. Pungarehu, Dec. 28. Two hundred men went out yesterday and destroyed about 150 acres of Maori crops ; about the same number have gone out again this morning. It is stated here that the Government have confiscated 60,0000 acres of land, as an indemnity for the cost of the late proceedings. Wellington, Dec. 28. The steamer Stella arrived last evening. She reports that Sergernt-Major Kelly, and Mr Allan, Returning Officers at Jackson Bay, left about a fortnight ago for Hokitika, and have not since been heard of. A search party have been out four days without finding any trace of them. The Government have not received any intelligence, beyond a communication from Mr Gillies, Chief Returning Officer at Hokitika, stating that he had not received the rettirns from Jackson’s Bay, and asking that the declaration of the poll might be postponed for a few days. The Government have under consideration appointment of a commission to consider tr?e land claims of volunteers who took part in ware in New Zealand.
