Commercial.
(From the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, of the 21st Oct.) Wool. —The third series, which was opened •on 23rd August, was brought to a close on 7th instant, having thus occupied 40 sittings. In the following tabulated statement are given the available arrivals and quantities catalogued .-—
From the former have to be deducted some 33,000 bales forwarded direct to various centres of consumption, and included in the latter are the quantities held over from previous •sales, estimated at 41,000 bales. The daily withdrawals reached approximately 30,000 bales, whereof a portion was re-offered during the currency of the auctions. It is est imated that in all about 45,000 bales have been held over for future disposal. The quantity taken for export is computed to be 170,000 bales, of which a few hundred bales only were bought for America'. At the date of the opening of the series harvest prospects were rendered somewhat uneei<ain by unfavorable weather, and a considerable amount of doubt at the same time existed as to the outcome of the negotiations with reference to the French Commercial Treaty with this country. Under these circumstances it was not surprising that some hesitation should be exhibited by buyers at the commencement, the result being that, although there was a good attendance, competition at the outset was not eager, and those Wools usually purchased by the home section of the ti*ade -notably coarse cross-breds and medium and faulty merinos—failed to command June closing rates. For two or three weeks the situation remained practically unchanged save the fact that as tlie daily offerings were heavy and contained a large proportion of medium and faulty scoured Wools, a decline on such sorts was established, ranging from id. to 1 jd. per lb. according to condition and (Quality.
