HALF-CASTE VOTERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Questions have arisen as to the status, as electors, of half-castes. Are they Maoris ? Are they Europeans ? Are they both ? Are they either at their own pleasure? In fine, may they be Maoris to-day, and Europeans to-morrow ? The facts are these: Two half-castes who are on the East Coast Roll under the residential qualification, and who voted as such on the 9th inst., claimed to vote and did vote at the Maori election on the Sth. On the Sth, they were Maoris, or half-caste Maoris passing for full Maoris; on the 9th, they voted under a qualification for which Maoris cannot register. Maoris being allowed to register only as freeholders under “ The Qualification of Electors Act, 1879.” The inference is plain: Either their votes on the Bth, at the Maori election, ought to be disallowed, or else their names ought to be removed from the East Coast Roll, as not being eligible for registration under the residential franchise.—Yours, &c., Legality.
