Tologa Bay.

[from our own correspondent.]

Since I last wrote you, forwarding the result of the elections here, public feeling has been “ fever heat ” to know the result at Gisborne and elsewhere. It is astonishing how strongly political feeling is shewn in a small place like this. A good story is going round here about a Maori voter, who having recorded his vote, and left the polling booth was in the township accosted by some friend, and being questioned regarding as to whom he had voted for, and replying, was persuaded out of his opinion. lie represented himself at the booth, and asked for the return of his ballot paper, as “he had done him wrong.” Needless to say however he could not undo his wrong. The craft Jessie, Captain Gibbons, is here, and about ready for a start, she has some 30 or 40 bales of wool, from Mr Reeve’s station on board. Shearing is being pushed on as fast as possible, and a number more bales are expected from other runs. Mr A. Reeves is having “ Boiling Down ” plant erected upon his run for the purpose of decreasing the number of his sheep. The necessary material is nearly all upon the spot now, and the setting of the boilers is to be commenced on Monday or Tuesday. A meeting of the Turanganui Highway Board Trustees, was held at the Sea View Hotel on Saturday, when it is understood a rate for the year was struck. But I have not been able to gather further information yet. It is understood that the present mailman for this (East) Coast, has received notice for the termination of his contract, aud that another person

has been appointed to succeed him, and the question is being asked, how can this, a public work, be. bestowed on any person, without tenders being called for the performance of such duty, and no tenders have yet been advertised.
