Commercial.
LONDON SEED TRADE. Messrs. John Shaw & Sons, of 37 Mark Lane, Jjondon, E.C., report through their agent, Mr. Leonard W. Blake, of Christchurch, that the market during the fortnight ending October 21st, was extremely quiet, the autumn consumptive demand being over, and no important speculative inquiry for next spring’s needs having set in, consequently values have been subjected to but very slight alterations. Red Clover was unchanged, though the opinion that the English Crop must be short had been considerably strengthened by a continuance of bad weather. American Red was quite neglected, but a little had been passing in French Seed. A few transactions had taken place in Alsyke and White Clover, but only in the finer qualities, which bid fair to be extremely scarce as the season advances. Trefoil was dearer, and a further rise was shortly expected. Italian Rye Grass quiet, but extremely firm. Canary and Hemp a shade easier. The imports of Clover and Grass -Seeds into the United Kingdom during September were 11,029 cwts., value £22,316, against 10,915 cwts., value £18,308, for September, 1880.
