AXES TO GRIND.

Touching lawyers. When recently verv general interest was felt about the amalgamation of the professions many people had stories of professional extortion, and the mysterious items in terrible bills, Johnson had tne best story. A debtor of his would not fork out —had the means, and lacked the will to pay. By some quibble Johnson could not lay legal hands upon his estate, and thus went for his body. Quill was employed in the process —a jolly fat lawyer, who liked a morning dip, and a long walk and a good breakfast; just the sort of man you would trust orphan children to, and a teetotaller would leave alone in a question of local option. Quill was set to catch the debtor, and one morning Johnson met Quill in the baths, went dowm a header, and shot up right alongside of him. “ Hello Quill 1 Is that you?” “ Believe so, old boy,” replied the jovial limb. “ Aint the water cold ?” “ Yes I” “ I say heard anything of my man ?” “ Yes ! Got him in quod.” “Right, keep him there.” “ Yes I I’m under,” and turnin up his toes Quill hobbed serenely. That conversation passed utterly out of Johnson’s mind for many months, until, in fact, he received a bill, wherein one item stood : “To consultation at sea, anent the incarceration of B, 13s 4d.” Then Johnson swore, and said he would vote to crucify both branches of the profession if amalgamating was not found to amend them.
