(from our own correspondents). New Plymouth, Nov. 28. Hiroki was brought up at the Police Court, this morning, when Dr. O’Carrol gave evidene as to the prisoner having an old wound above the hip bone. Richard Birch corroborated Mr. Fraser’s evidence, adding that the prisoner wore a cap like the one produced. The case is proceeding. Yesterday morning a fatal accident occur-, red on the Waitara river, resulting in the death of B. O’Dy, and his wife, they, with their little child, 7 months old, were in a sailing boat on the river, the wife was steering when the boat “ jibbed.” and the mainsail knocked her overboard. Ody jumped into the river after his wife, who clung to him, and after a struggle both were drowned. The man’s body was recovered 3 hours after, but the woman was not found. The child was in the boat and recovered alive, and has been taken by a settler at Waitara. O’dy was from Grey mouth.
Later. The body of Mrs. O’Dy was picked up this morning, and an inquest will be held to-day. November 29. Hiroki has been committed for trial fur the murder of McLean. Dunedin, Nov. 28. Mr. H. B. Mclntosh, Manager of the Walton Park Coal Company, has been arrested for forgery ; his defalcations amount to £1,500. November 30th. The attendance at the races today was good ; a strong gale blowing made it unpleasant. Hurdles—Agent 1 ; Isaac 2 ; 5 started ; Winner came in a length ahead comfortably. Time, 3 min’ 15 sec. Maiden Plate —Rowden 1 ; Mameluke 2 ; Eugene 3 ; 7 started. Mameluke and Eugene ran a dead heat for second place. Time, 2 min 25 secs. St Andrew’s Handicap—Chancellor 1 ; Adamant 2 ; Volunteer 3 ; time, 47 secs. Spring Handicap—Nautilus 1 ; Talent 2 ; only two started ; won easily. Trotting Match- -Petring 1; Bella 2 ; Billiard Ball 3 ; won comfortably. Wellington, Nov. 30. The races today were poorly attended, although the weather was fine. Railway Stakes Handicap—Hild 1 ; Grand Duchess 2 ; Danebury 3. Hurdles Handicap—Angler 1 ; Clarence 2 ; Shamrock 3. Nov. 28. J. Steele, an elderly patient at the hospital, was found drowned in the bath room yesterday, it is not known whether he committed suicide, or fell into the bath while in a fit. Napier, Nov. 30. Mr. Buchanan will address the Napier Sectors this evening. Reefton, November 30.
