Mr. M. J. Gannon left for the Wairoa and adjacent settlements on an electioneering tour, on Thursday afternoon last, and Capt. Porter followed on a like mission yesterday morning. Owing to the heavy rain which fell on Thursday evening the J Battery Band did not play so long as announced ; but will do so, weather permitting, on Thursday week next, from 7 to 9 p.m. Special services will be held in the Presbyterian Church on Sabbath next, when the Rev. J. McAra will give the quarterly sermon to the young, and the services at Matawhero, in the afternoon, and St. Andrew’s in the evening will be conducted by the Rev. J. M. Allan from Otago. A subscription list is being subscribed to with the object of obtaining a dozen bags of oysters, to plant them on the rocks round the Bay, with a view to their propagation. Thia is the last month of the open season, and as they spawn next month the opportunity is a good one. Mr. T. J. Dickson, mine host of the Argyll Hotel, has recently made some extensive alterations on his premises. The lower portions of the hotel are being replanned wiith a view to affording increased accommodation to, the public, as well as to those requiring private and commercial retiring rooms. The interior of the bar is also having a little attention paid to it, which will add materially to the comfort of those visiting that portion of the hotel.

The members of the Loyal Gisborne Lodge of Oddfellows are requested to meet in the Lodge-room, on Wednesday next, at 9 a.m., for the purpose of taking part in the Societies Fete on that day in aid of the Hospital.

The meeting convened by Mr. Bees last night, in McFarlane’s Hall, was crowded to the doors. Mr. Townley occupied the chair. The hour at which the meeting terminated prevents us giving any further particulars ; but a full report will appear in our next issue.

At last the cricketers arc beginning to show up. It will be seen by referring to our advertising columns, they intend playing several matches, which are likely to cause no little excitement. Among the several mentioned, it will be seen that they will play against the Napier team on the 27th and 28th of next month, at the Te Hapera cricket ground. The programme of the entertainment in aid of the Hospital to be given by members of the Early Closing Association, appears in this mornings issue, and will be found to be a very attractive one, consisting of songs, readings, and the amusing farce of “ Box and Cox ” by some of our leading amateurs. The object of the entertainment in conjunction with the extremely low prices—2/6 and 1/ —should draw a bumper house. A sentence recently passed on a youth at Manchester by one of the English Judges, has caused great indignation, It appears an elderly man seduced a young girl who was in his employ. The girl’s brother shot at the old scoundrel, and wounded him. The youth was put on his trial. During the hearing of the case, the seducer’s conduct appeared so black that the Judge gave him a severe reprimand. Notwithstanding, the poor youth was sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude.
