Commercial.

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agbxcy Company. The local agent of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received the following telegram from London under date 22nd inst. The wool sales opened this day at an average advance of 5 per cent on last sale’s closing rates. The sales comprised about 83,000 bales, 15,000 bales being sent to the manufacturing district direct, opening catalogue contained 40,000 bales. Gisborne, 25th Nov., 1881. LON D ON SEED TR A PE. Messrs. John Shaw & Sons, of 37 Mark Lane, London, E.C., report through their agent, Mr. Leonard W. Blake, of Christchurch, that there was very little of interest to record during the fortnight ending, October 6th. Values all round excited extreme firmness, but no advance had taken place in any article. The business passing in red clover was restricted by the high prices asked, and very little disposition was shown to touch it, till more was known of the new crops, but some few transactions had taken place at full prices. White clover was still coming to market in very small quantities, and what little was offered, was of poor quality ; fine parcels continuing quite exceptional. Consequently when met with, were readily sold, at long prices. There had been some dealings in alsyke, especially in extra choice samples for which fancy prices were paid, but other qualities were not meeting with much attention. A considerable business had been done in trefoil, and the tendency of prices was decidedly upwards, but no actual advance had been established. In Italian and perennial rye grasses, there is not much doing. Canary exhibited increasing strength. American linseed, cheap and good.
