[From our own Correspondents]. Napier, Nov. 25. At the R.M.’s Court this morning Mr. G. 11. Swan, brewer, was fined £2O for neglecting to affix and cancel a duty stamp on a cask of beer, as required by the Beer Duty Act, 1881. London, Nov. 17. Owing to rioting in Clare, King’s County, Ireland, the military and constabulary have been reinforced. A quantity of dynamite on board the steamer Glasgow, at Bristol, exploded. Nine persons were killed, and the ship greatly damaged. An attempt was mado to assassinate the Deputy Lieutenant in Westmeath, but was fortunately unsuccessful. At the wool sales to-day, the catalogue comprised 1,800 bales. Great demand was experienced for the various lots offered. Earl Cowper, Lord Lieut, of Ireland, made a speech to-day at Belfast, and thanked the landlords of Ireland for rallying to support the law. He feared the discontent and illfeeling of the tenants was deep seated. Washington, Nov. 23. The trial of Guiteau for the murder of President Garfield continues ; witnesses called for the defence are seeking to justify a belief in the prisoner’s insanity. Melbourne, Nov. 24. In the Legislative Assembly a Bill to legalise the Totalisator was rejected by a majority of six. Sydney, November 24. The cricket match between the English team and 22 of Maitland, New South Wales, was concluded to-day, resulting in a draw in favor of the English team.
