CAUSE OF MRS. LANGTRY’S DOWNFALL.

With an income of about £1,200 sbc embarked in a social current where the lightest draught craft needs af least £6,000. Society kindly magnified her husband’s resources five-fold, and they were soon “in the swim ” with the richest. To people in such a circle, getting credit in London is as easy as easy as breathing. No fancy is too extravagant, no price too large ; the dealers struggled for the privilege of becoming Mrs. Langtry’s creditors. But if the “Jersey Lily” contracted expensive tastes, so did her husband, and between them they rode the gift horse to an early grave. Seriously and skilfully managed, the Langtry credit ought to have lasted to a good old age, and they might have died in peace, with debts of not less than £50,000; but it was too much to try to crowd the £50,000 into three or four years. It is said Mrs. Langtry really means to try her fortune upon the stage.— London Correspondence Providence Press.
